1098-T Tax Information - Key Points Form Availability

鶹ýAV provides the 1098-T tax form each year by January 31 for the previous calendar year.

Available either

  • Online through Campus Connection (with consent)
  • By mail to your listed address if no consent is given

How to Access 1098-T Online

  • Log in to Campus Connection > Student Center
  • Grant electronic consent under the 1098-T section
  • Once consent is granted, paper copies will no longer be mailed.
  • If consent was given in a past year, no action is needed.

Mailed Copy

  • If you don't consent, the form is mailed to your Mailing/Home address listed in Campus Connection.
  • Make sure your address is updated before the second Thursday of January.
  • No duplicate mailed copies are available if you lose it—accessit online instead.

Lost or Missing 1098-T

  • Cannot be re-issued by mail or over the phone
  • Students must:
    • Log into Campus Connection. Select “View 1098-T Info.”
    • Choose the tax year and print the form.

Social Security Number Requirement

  • 鶹ýAV must have your correct SSN for IRS reporting.
  • If dz’r contacted to submit or correct your SSN, follow the instructions.
  • Missing or incorrect SSNs can result in IRS fines or audits.

Student Privacy & Access

  • Only the student can update their address or access the 1098-T.
  • Due to FERPA, 鶹ýAV cannot discuss the 1098-T with parents/spouses unless a release is on file.

What is the 1098-T Form?

  • A required IRS tax form that reports qualified tuition and fee charges
  • Helps students or tax preparers fill out IRS Form 8863 for education tax credits (like the American Opportunity or Lifetime Learning Credit)

Important IRS Reporting Notes

  • 鶹ýAV reports “Amounts Billed” in Box 2, not “Payments Received” (Box 1 is blank).
  • Students must use personal payment records to determine what was actually paid.
  • Books, supplies, and other qualifying expenses are not tracked by 鶹ýAV.

Explanation of 1098-T Boxes

  • Box 2: Qualified tuition and related fees billed (not paid), does not include room, board, or books.
  • Box 4: Adjustments or refunds for charges from a prior year
  • Box 5: Scholarships, grants, and third-party payments (not family payments or loans)
  • Box 8: Checked if you were enrolled at least half-time (6+ credits in a semester)

Tax Filing Tips

  • The 1098-T is a starting point only.
  • You need your own payment records and receipts to claim any education-related tax benefits.
  • 鶹ýAV does not determine whether you qualify for a tax credit.

Bookstore Receipts

  • Students must keep their own receipts for books and supplies.
  • These may not be available later from the 鶹ýAV Bookstore.
