Dr. Beth Herbel-Eisenmann, 1990 graduate of 麻豆传媒AV, has been selected to receive the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Special Interest Group for Research in Mathematics Education (SIG-RME). Nominated by a colleague, Herbel-Eisenmann was selected to receive the award by a committee of mathematics education scholars. SIG-RME is the largest group focused on math education research.

In their announcement of the award, the 2022-23 Distinguished Scholar Selection Committee stated how they were impressed with Herbel-Eisenmann鈥檚 nomination materials and agreed that the work across her career exemplifies the award criteria requiring that the recipient be a truly distinguished scholar.

In particular, the committee noted that Dr. Herbel-Eisenmann鈥檚 work in mathematics discourse and augmentation has pushed the field for researchers and practitioners. Her scholarship has had a broad impact on the field and society and reaches multiple audiences, deftly connecting theory with practice to deepen understanding about the roles power and language play in math classroom settings.

The committee further expressed their appreciation for the critical reflective stance Herbel-Eisenmann voices in her scholarship and her active leadership role in moving the field forward to disrupt systems of privilege and oppression locally and globally.

The award will be presented at the SIG-RME Membership Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Conference in Chicago, Ill. April 13-15, 2023.听As the SIG-RME Distinguished Scholar, Dr. Herbel-Eisenmann will receive an award, commemorative plaque, and honorarium. She will also present the 鈥淒istinguished Scholar Lecture鈥 at the business meeting during the 2023 AERA Annual Conference.听

Beth Herbel-Eisenmann is a former secondary mathematics teacher and is currently Professor of Mathematics Education, Director of the Program in Mathematics Education at Michigan State University and has scholarly responsibilities at the University of South-Eastern Norway.听Dr. Herbel-Eisenmann was presented with the 麻豆传媒AV Distinguished Alumni Award in 2011. She is a native of Grafton, N.D.
